Ring of Donegal

This tour departs from Donegal Town. We can advise you on transfers from Dublin or Belfast to Donegal if required.

Donegal is world renowned for its contributions to Irish Traditional Music and song. Irishmusictours.ie will take you on a unique journey throughout Donegal, home to world famous acts like Altan, Clannad, Enya and Fidil, alongside a wealth of amazing local musicians. Our journey takes us from Donegal town, north to Malin head, Ireland’s most northerly point, around Fanad Head and west to Arranmore Island. From here, we take in the quaint heritage village of Ardara while visiting the iconic Sliabh League Cliffs, Glencolumncille Folk Village, returning to Donegal Town. 5 nights/6 days of breathtaking scenery, a wealth of history, colourful local characters and amazing music.

The Ring of Donegal

A Magical Journey through Ireland’s forgotten county.


DAY 1 Pick Up 10am

Our Tour begins with a visit to Grianan of Aileach, a ring fort, located on top of a hill and built in the 7th or 8th century. Before we visit the fort we will have a short interactive tour to learn the history of why it was built and what it was used for. We then set off for Moville Pottery. Here we get to see the amazing craftsmanship that goes into each handmade piece. You will have the chance to decorate your own mug and it will be posted to you when finished.

We go to Malin Head the most northerly point of Ireland. Known for its beautiful rugged costal landscapes and where a part of Star Wars was filmed. We then take a short drive to Doagh Famine Village, we will have a guided tour, where you will see how people lived and survived in this area through the eras. You will get to see and Irish wake and sample some Irish Poteen. Next stop is Fort Dunree, it was a coastal defence fortification and now houses a military museum and wildlife discovery room.

Our final trip today is a short ferry crossing to Rathmullan, after dinner we can relax with some lively Traditional Irish Music.


Day2 Pick up 9.30

Today we depart for Fanad Head Lighthouse, part of the Wild Atlantic Way and one of the world’s most beautiful lighthouses and the famous Flight of the Earls, which took place here in 1607. Along the way, you’ll see views of the Inishowen Peninsula and Atlantic Ocean, and as the road rises, you can look down upon Portsalon and Ballymastocker Bay. From this vantage point, it’s easy to see why the beach was once voted the second most beautiful in the world.

Next stop is Glenveagh National Park. The visitor centre has a roof made of living heather to mimic the landscape and the displays contained within provide an introduction to the parks natural and built history. We will have a guided tour of the castle and learn of its sad history, afterwards you can explore the gardens at your leisure. We will stop for lunch at Leo’s Tavern birth place of Clannad and Enya. This pub has hosted many famous musicians since it opened in 1968 and attracts tourists all year round to view the music memorabilia adorning the walls before we take the ferry to Aranmore Island.

Arainn Mhor gives you a real insight to Island life. It has an untamed landscape and is rich in Irish culture and heritage. The views are breathtaking, gaze out into the Atlantic Ocean at the magnificent sea and cliffs and Tory Island with the mainland moutains, steeped in history standing on top of a cliff perch is Fort an Uilinn, which dates back to 800B.C. After the stunning drive around the Island we will have dinner with entertainment in the famous Jerry Early’s Bar.

DAY 3 Pick Up 10.00 AM

We leave the Island today and make our way to the Heritage Town of Ardara on route we will do the Santa Ana Drive, part of the Wild Atlantic Way, the scenery on this drive is second to none. We still stop at The Dolmen which dates back to 3500B.C and measures approximately 13 feet long, 20 feet across, and stands over 6 feet high, making it one of the largest in Ireland.

When we reach Ardara we will visit the world famous Eddie Doherty Tweed, Eddie himself will give you a demonstration of the dying tradition of hand-weaving on a Loom. This evening after dinner we will go to the Beehive Bar for a Traditional Irish Music Session.

DAY 4 Pick Up 10.00am

Today we will venture to Sliabh liag, some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, standing at 601m and on a clear day the view is second to none. We then take a step back in time as we have a tour of the Glen Folk Village. Situated in one of the most rural areas of Donegal, here you get an insight as to how the Irish people lived years ago in such a rural and tough time. The Cottages show how living conditions, quality of live, traditions, culture and tools developed over the years. On our way back to Ardara we will visit Assacannsa Waterfall, No matter what time of year this majestic waterfall provides a magical photo opportunity.

This evening you are free to choose where you would like to go for entertainment, we will of course inform you of what is on offer.

DAY 5 Pick Up 10.00AM

This morning we go to the buzzing town of Donegal. We will take a short cruise around Donegal Bay in the Waterbus. You will get to view the seal colony on Seal Island, The Bluestack Mountains and Donegal Bays many islands with a guide informing you of the historical, natural and geographical sights in view from the boat. Relax and have a drink whilst taking in the cabaret show on the return back to shore.

Then we will visit Donegal Castle, built in the 1500’s by a Clan called the O’Donnells, it was burnt when the O’Donnells left in the flight of the Earls, to prevent it being used by the enemies against the Irish people, It has been restored to its former glory and it one of the main attractions in Donegal Town.

Tonight Sean will provide us with a few Tunes in the Famous Nancy’s Bar in Ardara.

DAY 6 Pick Up 10.00am

Today it is time to say Farewell unfortunately and we will make our way back to Airport.
